Infrared Heat: What Is It and What Are Its Benefits?

You know that feeling when you leave a workout sweaty, strong, and completely recharged? Now imagine making the heat part of the workout itself.

Welcome to infrared.

At Sweat House, our infrared studio pairs purposeful heat with XMat Pilates, barre, and yoga to create a workout that challenges you from the inside out. Think controlled movement, deep core work, strength, mobility, and a whole lot of sweat. All in a warm, immersive environment designed to make you feel the difference.

But what exactly is infrared heat? And why does it make your workout feel so different?

Let’s break it down.

WHAT IS INFRARED HEAT?

Infrared heat is a form of radiant heat. Unlike traditional heating systems that simply warm the air around you, infrared energy is absorbed by your body and surrounding surfaces.

Think about standing in the sunshine. You can feel the warmth of the sun directly on your skin without the air around you necessarily feeling hot. Infrared works in a similar way, using radiant energy to create warmth rather than simply turning up the temperature of the room.

That distinction is what makes infrared different from a traditional heated environment. Instead of relying on hot air alone, infrared energy is absorbed by the body, warming muscles, joints, and tissues and encouraging your body's natural response to heat.

As your body warms up, it works to regulate its internal temperature, and that means sweat.

A lot of it.

But infrared isn't about making the room unbearably hot just for the sake of sweating. It's about finding the sweet spot where the heat enhances your movement without taking away from your ability to move with control and precision.

You aren't just surviving the heat. You're using it to evolve your movement.

INFRARED HEAT VS. A HOT ROOM

So, is infrared just another way of saying “hot workout”?

Not exactly.

Traditional heaters primarily warm the air around you. Infrared uses radiant energy that is absorbed by the body, creating a different kind of warmth and a different workout experience.

At Sweat House, our infrared classes are maintained at approximately 95–100°F. The goal is to find that “sweet spot”: enough heat to create deep, internal warmth while still allowing you to move with athletic precision.

Because the heat shouldn't be the hardest part of your workout.

The workout is the workout. The heat is there to elevate it.

WHY ADD HEAT TO YOUR WORKOUT?

Your body has to work a little differently when you're moving in the heat.

As your temperature rises, your body kicks into its natural cooling process. Blood flow and heart rate can increase, and your body produces sweat to help regulate your temperature.

So while you're holding that plank, pulsing at the barre, or working through your Pilates sequence, your body is doing more behind the scenes to keep you cool.

Infrared heat can complement exercise by supporting performance, circulation, recovery, and overall well-being. It's not about replacing the workout, it's about creating an environment that adds another layer to it.

And that's where things get interesting.

WHY INFRARED + PILATES + BARRE + YOGA?

Pilates, barre, and yoga are all about moving with intention. The tiny movements. The deep core engagement. The controlled pulses. The balance, stretching, and breathwork. The muscles shaking when you know you're exactly where you need to be.

Now add heat.

The warmth creates an environment where you can focus on how your body is moving while the intensity builds around you. You'll feel your muscles working, your heart rate climbing, and the sweat starting to show up. It's low-impact movement with a whole new level of intensity.

Strength. Mobility. Control. Endurance. Heat.
All working together.

THE BENEFITS OF INFRARED HEAT

The sweat is obvious, but that's only part of the story.

There are several ways infrared heat can complement movement and exercise, from performance and circulation to metabolic demand and stress reduction.

PERFORMANCE + MOBILITY

Warmth can help your body feel more prepared to move, making it a natural complement to workouts built around controlled movement and range of motion.

For Pilates, barre, and yoga, where alignment, control, and range of motion matter, that can make a big difference. You're not just moving through exercises or poses, you're focusing on how you're moving, where you're engaging, and how you can get more out of every movement.

INCREASED CIRCULATION

Heat naturally encourages your blood vessels to expand, increasing circulation throughout the body.

Pair that with movement and you've got a workout designed to get your body working from head to toe, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles you're using throughout class.

METABOLIC DEMAND aka HOW HARD YOUR BODY IS WORKING

Your body works hard to maintain a stable internal temperature, especially when you're exercising in the heat.

That means your heart rate can rise as your body works to keep you cool.

But here's the important part: more sweat doesn't automatically mean a better workout.

At Sweat House, we're not chasing sweat just for the sake of sweat. We're creating a workout where the heat works with your movement to make the experience more challenging, immersive, and intentional.

STRESS + WELL-BEING

Sometimes you just need to sweat it out.

The combination of movement, heat, music, and focused breathing creates an experience that can help you step away from everything else for an hour and be completely present. The connection between heat, exercise, and the body's feel-good response, can contribute to that relaxed, accomplished feeling you get after class.

You know the one.

That “I really needed that” feeling.

THE BIGGEST MYTH: “I NEED TO DETOX”

Let's clear this one up.

You've probably heard that sweating “detoxes” your body, but that's not quite how it works. Your liver and kidneys are responsible for your body's primary detoxification processes. Sweat plays an important role in regulating your temperature, but it's not your body's main detox system. So no, you're not literally sweating out last night's dinner.

What you are doing is moving your body, raising your heart rate, challenging your muscles, and giving yourself an hour to focus on you.

That post-class glow?

Very real.

The feeling of being relaxed, accomplished, and refreshed after a sweaty workout is part of what makes the experience so good.

WHAT DOES AN INFRARED CLASS FEEL LIKE?

If you've never taken an infrared class, you might be wondering what you're getting yourself into. The room will feel warm when you walk in, but you're not walking into a sauna. You'll start moving, your body will gradually warm up, and the sweat will follow.

From there, it's all about the workout.

In XMat, expect a full-body mat Pilates workout that blends controlled, intentional movement with strength and core work. You’ll move through exercises designed to challenge your stability, mobility, and muscular endurance, with the infrared heat adding an extra layer to the experience. Think slow, strong, and seriously effective.

XMat Elevate takes that Pilates foundation and turns the energy up. This more upbeat class moves to the rhythm of the music, guiding you through progressive blocks of movement that build as you go. Expect full-body strength, core work, and plenty of sweat, all with a faster-paced, music-driven feel that keeps the energy high from start to finish.

Infrared Barre brings the small movements and big burn you know and love from barre into the heat. Expect a full-body workout filled with pulses, holds, controlled movements, and strength work designed to challenge your legs, glutes, core, and upper body. It’s low impact, but don’t let that fool you—you’ll definitely feel the shake.

Infrared Yoga is your chance to slow things down while still getting a great workout. You’ll move through an intentional flow that combines yoga poses, stretching, balance, and breathwork while the infrared heat helps create a warm, immersive environment. Expect to leave feeling stretched out, grounded, refreshed, and recharged.

The temperature is there to enhance the experience, not distract from it.

And yes, you may look around halfway through class and think, Okay... I am definitely sweating.

That's the point.

But you aren't here to prove how much heat you can tolerate.

You're here to move in it.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN INFRARED CLASS

A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Hydrate before class. Don't wait until you're already thirsty to start drinking water.

  • Bring water. You'll be sweating, so keep it nearby throughout class.

  • Dress for the heat. Wear comfortable workout clothes that let you move freely and feel good in a warm environment.

  • Listen to your body. Everyone responds to heat differently. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, or unwell, take a break and let your instructor know.

  • Give yourself time to adjust. Your first infrared class may feel different from anything you've done before. Let your body get familiar with the environment and focus on your own experience.

You don't need to “win” the heat.

Just show up, move, sweat, and see how you feel.

WHO ARE INFRARED PILATES, BARRE, AND YOGA FOR?

Pretty much anyone ready to switch things up.

You don't need to be a Pilates pro. You don't need years of barre or yoga experience. And you definitely don't need to consider yourself someone who loves working out in the heat. Maybe you already love Pilates and want a new way to experience it. Maybe you're a barre regular looking for a deeper challenge. Maybe you want to stretch, breathe, and reset through an intentional yoga flow. Maybe you want a low-impact workout that still leaves you feeling seriously worked. Or maybe you're just curious about what all the infrared hype is about.

Whatever brought you in, meet yourself where you are and let the workout take you from there.

FEEL THE HEAT AT SWEAT HOUSE

At Sweat House, we believe your workout should leave you feeling stronger than when you walked in.

Stronger in your body. More connected to your movement. More confident in what you can do.

Infrared heat adds another layer to that experience, combining warmth with the controlled, intentional movement of Pilates and barre to create a workout that challenges you in a completely different way.

You’ll sweat. You’ll shake. You’ll feel the burn.

And you'll probably leave with that post-class glow we all know and love.

Come for the movement. Stay for the sweat.
